A folding e-bike fits in the boot, the motorhome or under your desk. Here you'll find folding e-bikes from 14 to 20 inches in our price comparison.
Who a folding e-bike is worth it for
Folding e-bikes come into their own when space is tight or you combine the bike with other transport: ride to the station, fold it, take it on the train, ride on at your destination. Campers and boat owners also appreciate that it fits in a storage locker. And a folded bike in your flat or office is better protected against theft than one outside at a bike rack.
Wheel size: 14, 16 or 20 inches?
Wheel size determines how the bike rides and how small it packs. 14- and 16-inch models are especially compact and easy to carry, but feel twitchier and absorb potholes less well. 20 inches is the most popular compromise: stable enough for longer distances and still easy to fold. Models with fat 20-inch balloon tyres (fat tyre) ride comfortably but are considerably heavier.
- Weight: compact models often weigh 15–20 kg, fat-tyre folding bikes 25–35 kg
- Folded size and mechanism: how many steps, and how securely does the hinge lock?
- A removable battery makes carrying and charging easier
- Check the maximum load – small frames are often limited to 100–120 kg
Taking it on buses and trains
Many transport operators and long-distance rail services treat folded bikes as hand luggage, so they can be taken along without a bike ticket. The exact rules vary by transport network and train type, though – check your operator's conditions of carriage in advance. A battery in the bike is usually no problem on trains and buses, but it is on flights: e-bike batteries almost always exceed the watt-hour limit allowed for passengers.
What to look for in budget folding e-bikes
The folding hinge is the most important part of the whole bike. It must close without play and lock securely. Also pay attention to the brakes: mechanical disc brakes are common at entry level, hydraulic brakes bite harder. And check the speed claim: some folding bikes are advertised with 30 or 32 km/h – but as a pedelec, the motor may only assist up to 25 km/h.
Care tip for folding hinges
Check the folding hinge and handlebar hinge regularly for play and retighten quick releases as specified by the manufacturer. A drop of oil on the joints prevents creaking and corrosion.
